Publication Dayz: The Movie

On the very humid morning of May 7, A.D. 2009, two young squires trekked the ancient island of Manhattan spreading the gospel: The gospel of comics.

These two brave souls fought drastically changing weather, an occasional rude person, and, eventually, a downpour of the hardest rain ever seen this side of the Mississippi.

As fate would have it, the NYU Comic Book League (previously known as Bags n' Boards: Graphic Literature Lovers) made their first official arch-enemy: Referenzo the Terrible.

At their second stop, the heart of knowledge in the NYU empire, Bobst Library, Phil was viciously attacked by this evil man. Calmly and graciously, Phil approached the reference desk to see if the Comic Book Review Issue #4 could be put somewhere in the library. Then, Referenzo (who looks suspiciously like an older Harold Ramis) yelled at him for wasting his time.

Referenzo then said to Phil, "judging by the red star on your hat, and your bag, the publication is political." Offended that Referenzo would attack him in such a judgmental way, Phil attempted to walk away, but then this wretched library employee slammed his fist on the desk and yelled, "Wait!"

Referenzo then told the two kind-hearted NYU CBL creators to take their publication to the seventh floor or some crap. He was ignored, and Mike and Phil found suitable locations all around Bobst library. And so, true believers, is how our fine league got its first enemy. Look out for Referenzo, he is very mean and has no respect for the thousands of workers who died in struggle for better rights, as represented in the red star

After the library, things got much better for our two heroes. They met very nice people all over Manhattan, and many smiles and laughs filled their adventure. In particular, the women at the NYU Jeffery S. Gould Welcome Center were quite helpful.

At the second comic shop visited, St. Mark's Comics, the owner decided he would sell the publication for $1 an issue. NYU CBL is prevented from making money on their work, as established by the New York University OSA guidelines, so Mike and Phil did not make their millions (that would come later) but were happy to have Issue #4 on the shelf of a fine comic shop.

Traveling the far corners of academia, comic shops, and assorted businesses in the City of New York, Mike and Phil brought the publication to these 22 locations.

  2. I can tell my children and their children that I was there -- I was out there in the trenches, pounding the pavement, hustling wares, delivering comic books and this movie is proof. Golden Age comic book publishers have nothing on us!
Blood was shed, "Wayne's World" references were made, news boxes were vandalized, and hundreds of copies of Issues #3 & #4 were spread all across Manhattan. An Don Quixote-esque journey, if you will.

    NEW HEADLINE:
"The Group Formerly Known as Bags & Boards Flyers All of Manhattan. Bloomberg Mad Again at Sexton. Sexton Mad Again at the Newly Formed NYU Comic Book League. NYU Comic Book League Still Angry at Jeph Loeb and the Guy Who Came Up with the Name: Bags & Boards: Graphic Literature Lovers"

Nice to see that we're officially going with the new name, NYU Comic Book League -- I'll check the papers for an official name change form or something.
Face front, True Believers, I think there could be a sequel in the works...
