First Meeting Minutes

I can tell you all one thing right now, our minds were pretty much blown to gooey pieces because of the incredible turnout for our first meeting of the semester (incredible by our standards, but incredible nonetheless). It got a little out of control, but, well, the minutes will explain...

7:00: A Bags & Boards record! 2, count 'em, 2 tables worth of prospective members! We assembled three round tables together into the shape of Mickey Mouse ears. Conspiracy? I think not.

7:05: Chair madness! Where's Chairface Chipendale when you need him? (+5 brownie points to Taimur for "Tick" reference).

7:07: Taimur is like Rodney Dangerfield. "I'm tellin' ya, I get no respect!"

7:10: "Let's play the game where we learn each others' names!" (+5 brownie points to Mike for "Heavyweights" reference)

7:25: Found out Courtney chose Batgirl logo. She is the bat!

7:30: GAMMA RAYS! aka sorority girls on all sides. Is that Carrie Fisher? That movie looks really bad.

7:35: Mike starts singing the themes from the Incredible Hulk & The Mighty Thor.

7:42: Sororities are outta here! CBL attains full ownership of the 7th floor lounge.

7:50: We form a giant circle of chairs in the middle of the room, consider playing "Extreme Duck-Duck-Goose"

7:52: Everyone reintroduces themselves. "But we already know each others' names" (+5 brownie points to Mike for a 2nd "Heavyweights" reference).

8:00: And the "Zing of the Night" goes to...*drum roll*..."Does that mean your Ph.D. will be in 'Horribleness'?" -Aton.

8:20: Taimur reveals there has been video of his triumph over Jeph Loeb at SDCC '09 this entire time

8:35: Taimur and Mike discuss "To Catch a Predator"...with the Predator.

9:16: "Tiny Titans" discussion. Baby Killer Croc?! Now that's just ridiculous!

9:17: We need more quotes.

There they are, the First Meeting Minutes, artfully crafted by our Club Historian, Taimur Dar, and editied by yours truly. Check in next week for more hilariousness!

Giant-Sized Club Fest Meeting Minutes

Ah, the Fall Club Fest…

It’s got everything you hate about big conventions: it gets hot and stuffy, there’s way too many people shoved into small aisles limiting pedestrian traffic, tons of freebies that end up on the floor or in the trash, and remarkably strange booths manned by aggressive table jockeys.

And yet there’s an unmistakable excitement –a certain magic in the air, if you will –when you’re pressing the flesh at your group’s table, spreading the Gospel of the Comic Book League.

12:17: Phil and Mike start unbuttoning their shirts in the Kimmel Lounge.

12:27: Impromptu photo session.

12:45: A foot race between Superboy (Phil) and Spider-Man (Mike) on the rooftop track of Coles seems like a good publicity stunt at the time. Also, Taimur’s alleged fear of elephants.

1:26: Phil and Mike inconspicuously steal chairs from other tables, thus breaking the Club Fest record for “The Largest Number of People Sitting at One Club’s Table” at 4 people.

2:25: Shattered the previous year’s total of people who signed up.

2:37: Guy wearing “Ghostbusters” t-shirt passes by for the third time. He still ignores Taimur.

2:38: Taimur considers throwing candy bar at him…again.

2:48: “If I didn’t care about the First Days of Animal Man and the Middle Days of Animal Man, why would I care about the Last Days of Animal Man?” –Mike.

2:53: Banana peel guy.

3:03: Finished our first sign-up sheet!

3:10: Met Jack Kirby’s great nephew.

3:16: And then there were 2…

3:43: Taimur is finally recognized…sorta.

3:45: Finished our second sign-up sheet!

4:00: And there was 1…

4:20: We’re at 48 names on the list!

4:25: Taimur and Phil spot a guy with Venom shirt. He signs up.

4:28: What Taimur looks for in a woman…hilarity ensues.

4:30: What Phil looks for in a woman.

4:36: Taimur throws a piece of chocolate at a guy with a Batman shirt on. He was still unresponsive.

4:40: Taimur actually starts reading “DC Superfriends”. Engergy/Excitement levels going down. “It’s what I thought it would be,” Taimur said.

4:45: “Xice” is allegedly the best comic alive, according to one passerby.

5:10: Guy with “X-Men” shirt signs up. Almost simultaneously, Taimur begins talking comics with the guy at the Christian (SEED) table next to us.

5:25: We set up over two tables!

5:26: Courtney’s back!

5:37: Phil leaves.

5:38: Phil pretends to be a potential member.

5:41: Courtney and Taimur think about starting a dance party.

5:43: Successful flag down of guy wearing a Batman hat.

5:55: The Comic Book League is going to help out Homecoming!

5:56: 4th sign-up sheet filled!

6:13: Mike returns. Also tries to be potential member.

6:27: Taimur leaves. Asked him to get 100 Nazi scalps; he got 200.

6:36: In-depth discussion of “Inglourious Basterds”. Conclusion: Christoph Waltz should win an Academy Award for his role as Col. Hans Landa.

7:02: Club Fest Total: 102 prospective members!

WANTED: Spidey616

(Artist Rendition)

The latest news in the comic book fandom crimes of Spidey616

CUP O' Q&A: Tim Gunn, X-Factor & More!

Kiel Phegley: You mentioned that frequent Cup O’ questioner
Spidey 616 was there! What was he like? Did he bring a laundry list of questions
about obscure Marvel characters to hold his own private
Q&A?

Joe Quesada: [laughs] Spidey 616 is our number one fan, he rocks and
comes to all of our events. He’s smart as a whip and knows his Marvel. It isn’t
an event if Spidey 616 isn’t there. Good guy, that Spidey 616.

However, he's finally slipped up and left a clue to his civilian identity. It won't be long now until he's finally apprehended

Spider-Office: Letters

Dear Amazing Spidey Crew,

600 issues…a few adjectives come to mind
(all positive BTW), but I’ll just stick with the obvious one- AMAZING! To think
it was only six years ago that I was reading #500, and though both my world and
Spidey’s has changed significantly since then, through it all I can safely say I
get the same amount of joy and excitement with each issue. Perhaps even
more.

Great to see Dan Slott work on Spidey fulltime and for
me the math on #600 was simple: SLOTT + DOC OCK=SOLD! That plus 104 pages all
for the LOW, LOW COST OF $4.99!!!! Kudos all around. Guess I’ll have to return
the favor by buying all the variant covers, won’t I?

Spidey
has always been a huge part of my life and though I can’t recall exactly my
first encounter with the webhead, I do know Spider-Man brought me back into
comics and has kept me in since. After seeing the first Spider-Man movie 3x in
theaters I got a subscription to ASM ASAP starting with #481. I regret not
returning to read the title when Straczynski first took over, but I’m so glad
right now to be able to be part of this new era of Spider-Man.

I’ll
admit that I haven’t loved everything that’s happened in the past 1 ½ year in
ASM and still have some unanswered questions regarding One More Day which I’m
sure you’ve probably heard enough already. Still waiting to hear about
whatever happened to the organic webbing and Spider-Man’s other enhanced powers,
but after everything else that’s been revealed thus far, I can wait a little bit
longer.

Looking forward to see what you guys have planed going
forward A new Sinister Six? Wonder who’s in this roster. Doc Ock? Ana Kraven?
The new Vulture?

I hear that Slott and artist supreme Marcos
Martin will be teaming up again for a Mysterio story (DROOLS). Eagerly waiting
to read it and see who’s under the dome. Quentin Beck, Daniel Berkhart, Francis
Klum, or even…..A NEW MYSTERIO! Could it have anything to do with police
officers: Quentin Palone & Julian Beck?

Curious and curiouser.
Guess we’ll just have to wait and see won’t we? And on the subject of baddies, I
don’t suppose we’ll be seeing the comic debut of Swiss Miss a new villain
created for the stage set to appear in the SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK musical
around the time it opens this February? How’s that for a free plug?

What else can I say but keep up the great work and assuming the
thrice monthly schedule continues I’ll see ya again in May 2012 for #700! So
what are you guys waiting for? Better get a head start on it now. I can wait…

-Taimur Dar
